چکیده

Sir, Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhea are the leading reportable causes for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States.[1,2] In UK, gonorrheal disease is considered the second most common sexually transmitted infection of bacterial origin.[3] In France, the average number of Neisseria gonorrhea isolated per laboratory per year decreased from 10.6 in 1986 to 0.6 in 1997, but then increased yearly to reach 1.9 in 2000.[4] Also, gonococcal and nongonococcal urethritis are the most commonly reported STDs in China since the re-emergence of STDs in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.[5]

[Diagnosis of gonococcal urethritis and chlamydial urethritis by polymerase chain reaction].

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was compared to standard methods (cultures for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis and an enzyme-immunoassay for C. trachomatis) in diagnosis of gonococcal and chlamydial urethritis in 40 male patients with urethritis. Gonococcal urethritis was diagnosed by detection of a 206 bp DNA fragment amplified by PCR with N. gonorrhoeae-specific prime...

Detection of Chlamydia trachomatis DNA in patients with non-gonococcal urethritis using the polymerase chain reaction.

A practical protocol using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was designed for detecting Chlamydia trachomatis in clinical samples. DNA was extracted from material collected on urethral swabs and used as substrate for the PCR. The target was a 600 basepair DNA segment of the multicopy plasmid that is common to all strains of the bacterium. Negative samples were checked for loss of DNA or prese...

Leucocyte esterase test as rapid screen for non-gonococcal urethritis.

The two standard tests for the initial diagnosis of non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU), microscopic examination of gram stained urethral smears and the two glass urine test, have the disadvantage of being insensitive and subjective. The leucocyte esterase test detects enzymes specific to polymorphonuclear leucocytes and can therefore be used as a sensitive indicator of pyuria. This study sought to...

Evaluation of Gonodecten for the presumptive diagnosis of gonococcal urethritis in men.

Gonodecten (Gd; U.S. Packaging Corp., LaPorte, Ind.) is a commercially available test for the presumptive diagnosis of gonococcal urethritis in men. With this test, urethral discharge is collected on a swab, placed in a plastic tube, and moistened with oxidase reagent. Development of a purple color on the swab within 3 min indicates the presence of gonococci. This system was compared with cultu...
